Slow start hurts UOIT on their southwestern road trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LONDON, Ont. – Although the Ridgebacks had a better effort on Sunday afternoon against the defending CIS champion Western Mustangs, they failed to pick up a point on their two-game weekend road trip.

UOIT opened up the weekend with a 5-3 loss to the Windsor Lancers followed by a 3-0 shutout to the hands of the Mustangs.

The Ridgebacks would get off to a slow start in their match against Windsor on Saturday as the home team scored two goals in the opening two minutes. The Lancers got off to an even better start in the second period, scoring two goals in under two minutes to take a commanding 5-1 lead.

UOIT showed a lot of fight cutting the lead to just two but would eventually run out of time. Nicole Gorda (Edmonton, Alta.) scored a power play goal while Kassidy Nauboris (Brampton, Ont.) and Teresa Horner (Hamilton, Ont.) had third period markers.

Tori Campbell (Saskatoon, Sask.) allowed all five Windsor goals while Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) stopped all 14 shots she faced in relief. Krystin Lawrence led the Lancers with one goal and three assists.

Playing with a lot more confidence on Sunday afternoon, the Ridgebacks had a number of scoring chances to open the game but goaltender Katie Jacobs stood strong. At the other end of the ice, it was a double deflection off a shot from the point that put Western on the board.

In the second and third period, Jacobs continued to stand on her head going on to make 24 saves for her second shutout in as many starts. Charette made 22 saves in the losing effort.

Brittany Clapham would do the damage on the scoreboard as she scored goals in the second and third periods to give Western the 3-0 win.

The Ridgebacks (3-1-9-1) have a hole to climb out of if they want to qualify for the postseason, sitting nine points behind Laurentian (5-2-6-2) for eighth spot in the conference standings. They will hope to start a win-streak next Saturday in St. Catharines as they take on the Brock Badgers (4-1-8-1).
