Season ends for UOIT with a shutout loss

OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women's soccer team had their season come to an end on Wednesday evening as the Carleton Ravens upset the Ridgebacks 2-0 at Civic Fields.

This is the first time since the Ridgebacks' inaugural season (2012) that the team failed to win a playoff game.

Carleton would get off to a quick start as Vanessa Germano put home a loose ball off a cross in the eighth minute, putting the Ravens up 1-0.

UOIT would look to score the equalizer in the late stages of the half, but captain Kylie Bordeleau's long range attempt just sailed over the bar as Carleton went into the locker room up by one.

In the second half, Carleton would sit back on defence and create a wall in front of goalkeeper Elizabeth MacDougall. Even though the Ravens did a good job clearing any ball UOIT sent into the box, the Ridgebacks did generate a couple of scoring chances.

Substituting into the game at halftime, Tyra Gordon (Ajax, Ont.) had UOIT's best chance to score as she streaked in from the left side and snuck the ball behind MacDougall. Unfortunately for UOIT, it went just wide of the net.

Desperate for a goal to keep their season alive, UOIT sent everyone on the field into the offensive zone. Carleton's Tina Lacava would capitalize on a Carleton counter attack as she scored an insurance marker in the 90th minute, putting an end to UOIT's season.

MacDougall finished the night making five saves for the cleansheet victory.

Getting down in the game was the Ridgebacks' Achilles heel as they failed to earn points in any game this season where their opponent scored the opening goal.

The Ridgebacks all-time playoff record is now 3-4 with their highest finish coming last season winning an OUA bronze medal. The Ridgebacks all-time record is 47-29-14 and have appeared in the postseason in all four years of the program's history.

The Ravens will now play their cross-town rival Ottawa in the conference semifinals. Ottawa won the OUA eastern conference regular season title with a 13-0-3 record.
