TORONTO, Ont. – After opening the weekend with a victory, the UOIT women's hockey team had to settle for a split as the Toronto Varsity Blues picked up a 3-1 win on Saturday night.
Autumn Garnham opened the scoring 9:51 into the first period, with assists to Jessica Robichaud and Jacqueline Scheffel.
Sonja Weidenfelder scored her third of the season to put the Varsity Blues ahead 2-0 with 35 seconds remaining on Toronto's power play at the 14:03 mark of the first. Rebecca Bourgeois and Cristine Chao earned assists on the goal.
After one period the Ridgebacks trailed 2-0 and were being outshot 8-5.
In the second period UOIT generated more chances, but it was Kassandra Roache who scored for Toronto with 6:21 remaining in the period to give the Varsity Blues a 3-0 lead with 20 minutes left to play.
Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.) scored her second of the season with 5:02 remaining in the game, the lone Ridgeback goal of the night. Samantha Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.) and
Nicole LoPresti (Hamilton, Ont.) earned assists for UOIT on the play.
Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) made 16 saves in the loss for UOIT, while Valencia Yordanov turned aside 19 Ridgeback shots in the win for Toronto.
Next weekend the Ridgebacks return home as they host the Nipissing Lakers on Friday night before welcoming the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday afternoon.
