TORONTO – The UOIT women's hockey team earned their second victory of the season with a 4-3 shootout win over the Ryerson Rams Friday night at the Mattamy Centre in Toronto.
The Ridgebacks improve to 2-1-0 while the Rams fall to 0-2-1. With the new point structure implemented in OUA women's hockey (three points for a regulation win and two points for an overtime victory), the Ridgebacks have five points on the year and are one-point behind a trio of teams.
UOIT would need a comeback effort as back-to-back third period Ryerson power play goals put the Rams in front 3-1.
Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.) would start the comeback as she scored her second goal of the year at the 7:56 minute mark. Less than 30 seconds later,
Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.) scored from a tough angle to level the score.
Despite outshooting Ryerson 5-1 in the overtime periods, the Ridgebacks failed to score and a shootout was need to break the deadlock. UOIT managed to find their scoring tough as
Nicole Gorda (Edmonton, Alta.) and
Sam Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.) made good on their attempts while goaltender
Tori Campbell (Saskatoon, Sask.) shut the door.
Gorda and Ball would each finish with one goal and an assist, while defender
Laura Marchese (Burlington, Ont.) had two helpers.
Campbell stopped 24 shots in her second win of the season. UOIT ended up outshooting Ryerson 35-27. The Ridgebacks were 0-for-6 with the man advantage and Ryerson was 2-for-3.
UOIT will be back in Toronto on Saturday when they take on the Varsity Blues. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
