ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Kevin George scored a breakaway goal in double overtime on Friday night to give the UOIT men's hockey team a 4-3 victory over the Brock Badgers.
After a Badger scoring attempt,
Cameron Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) would take the rebound and connect with George (Uxbridge, Ont.) on a stretch pass to send him alone on net. George would make no mistake, beating Brock goaltender Clint Windsor for the game winner. George's ninth goal marks career high while he leads the team in scoring with 15 points.
The game winner came over 45 minutes after the Ridgebacks scored their third goal of the game, as UOIT struck three times over a three minute span in the first period.
Jesse Stoughton (Bobcaygeon, Ont.) and
Mike Robinson (Stouffville, Ont.) had power play markers, while
Jordan Ramsay (Pickering, Ont.) had the other.
UOIT would hold a 3-1 late into the third period, but Brock would score two goals 61 seconds apart as
Sammy Banga and
Jordan Gignac sent the game to overtime.
A big reason why UOIT picked up two points was the performance of their penalty killing unit, which shutout the Badgers on all seven of their attempts.
Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) also had a big night in between the pipes as he made 40 saves including three in overtime.
At 8-9-1, UOIT is in a tie for sixth place in the eastern conference standings with the Queen's Gaels. Brock has a matching 8-9-1 record and is in fifth place in the western conference.
UOIT will look to complete the four-point weekend with a road game against the York Lions (7-10-1) on Saturday. The Lions enter the game following a 4-1 victory over Queen's on Friday. Puck drop in North York is at 7 p.m.
