UOIT caps off a six-point weekend with a 1-0 win OUA Women's Soccer: UOIT defeated Nipissing 1-0 NORTH BAY, Ont. – The No. 9 ranked UOIT women's soccer team picked up their fifth straight conference victory with a 1-0 shutout over the Nipissing Lakers on Sunday afternoon.
UOIT remains in first place in the OUA eastern conference with a 6-0-1 record, as they sit one point ahead of the No. 3 ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees who earned a 1-0 victory over their cross-town rivals Carleton.
For the first time during this five-game winning streak,
Shannon Lucas of Ajax did not record the game-winning goal for UOIT. On Sunday, it was freshman
Katherine Koehler-Grassau (Greely, Ont.) in the spotlight, as she scored the game's lone goal in the 45th minute. With the Ridgebacks swarming the Lakers' goal,
Rachel Matthews (Ajax, Ont.) sent in a shot on target. Nipissing goalkeeper Carlee Bennard made the save, but Koehler-Grassau tapped in the rebound to record her second goal of the season.
Despite poor weather conditions, UOIT's offence had plenty of scoring chances over the course of the 90-minute match. The Ridgebacks had a goal disallowed, a penalty kick saved and 12 shots on target stopped.
Melissa Linton (Cobourg, Ont.) earned her third shutout in four games in goal for UOIT. The third-year netminder made three stops in her sixth win of the year.
The Ridgebacks' winning streak will be on the line next Saturday afternoon when they host the Queen's Gaels (4-2-1) at Vaso's Field. Kick-off for UOIT's annual homecoming event is 1 p.m.
