OUA Women's Soccer: UOIT defeated Queen's 1-0

KINGSTON, Ont. – Shannon Lucas (Ajax, Ont.) scored her third straight game-winning goal as the UOIT women's soccer team kept their undefeated record intact with a 1-0 shutout victory over the No. 10 ranked Queen's Gaels.

The Ridgebacks are the only team in the OUA eastern conference without a loss as they have won three straight games and are 4-0-1 on the year. With a game in hand, UOIT sits two points back of the No. 6 ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees (5-1-0), who they beat 3-2 to open the year. The loss marked Queen's first of the season, as they fall to 3-1-1.

When UOIT head coach Peyvand Mossavat moved Lucas from the defensive unit to striker, she caught fire as she has scored five goals in three games, which includes four this weekend. Sunday's goal came in the 66th minute, after the Ridgebacks were awarded a penalty kick when Jessica Mithrush (Thunder Bay, Ont.) beat a defender and was taken down in the box. Lucas buried the penalty kick for the lone goal of the game, ending Queen's goalkeeper Madison Tyrell's season clean-sheet streak at four games.

UOIT had a wave of offensive pressure in the second half which included a shot going off the crossbar just prior to the penalty. UOIT would end up out-shooting Queen's 15-7, with ten Ridgeback shots ending up on target.

Melissa Linton (Cobourg, Ont.) made five saves for her second consecutive cleansheet. The third-year goalkeeper has played in every minute for UOIT this season and has allowed three goals against in five games.

UOIT is now one of nine teams in the country without a loss, with York (6-0-0) being the only other team from the OUA.

The Ridgebacks will have the week off before heading up North where they will face the Laurentian Voyageurs (Sept. 20) and Nipissing Lakers (Sept. 21). The team's next home game is on Saturday, September 27 against Queen's, which marks UOIT's homecoming event.
