UOIT finishes strong at the OUA Curling Championship
GUELPH, Ont. – The UOIT women's curling team made a late run at the OUA Championship but just missed out on clinching a spot in the elimination round for the second straight year. The event was hosted by the University of Windsor at the Guelph Curling Club.
UOIT got off to a slow start on day one losing to Queen's (7-3) and Toronto (7-5), while splitting day two action with a win over McMaster (7-5) and loss to Laurentian (10-5).
The Ridgebacks turned their fortunes around over the next three draws picking up three straight wins over Algoma (8-4), Waterloo (8-6) and Guelph (7-3), but it wasn't quite enough to book a spot in the elimination round as they finished in fourth place, one game behind the Voyageurs.
UOIT's win over Waterloo came in dramatic fashion as the Ridgebacks trailed the Warriors 6-3 heading into the eighth end. The Ridgebacks squad would tie things up with three points while holding the hammer, followed by stealing two in the ninth end.
The men's team did not have much luck on their side throughout the bonspiel as they posted a 1-5 round robin record and failed to advance to the showdowns. The Ridgebacks lone win came against Laurentian as they came up with a 6-2 victory over the Voyageurs.
This is the third year UOIT has competed at the OUA curling championship.
