CIS Women's Soccer Championship
Consolation Semifinal: Montreal defeats UOIT 0-0 (4-3 penalty kicks)
Box ScoreQUEBEC CITY – The UOIT women's soccer team's first trip to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national championship came to an end on Friday as the Montreal Carabins defeated the Ridgebacks 4-3 in penalty kicks.
The program's third season has been full of "firsts" for head coach
Peyvand Mossavat and his Ridgeback squad. The team would beat Toronto 2-1 in their quarter-final match to advance to the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) final four. In Hamilton, the team would earn the program's first-ever OUA medal (bronze) and punch their ticket to the national championship with a 2-0 shutout over Laurier. This week at nationals, Mossavat became the first coach from UOIT to be named CIS coach of the year.
Goals were scarce in Friday's season finale as penalty kicks were needed to declare a winner. After trading goals over the first two rounds, Ridgeback shooters would miss two consecutive shots to give the Carabins 3-2 advantage. With a Montreal failed attempt,
Jessica Mithrush (Thunder Bay, Ont.) would keep the Ridgebacks slim hopes alive with a strike in the corner of the net. However, UOIT's magic would run out as Beatrice Toupin (Montreal) tucked away the Carabin's fourth penalty to end the game.
"I thought it was a good game," said Mossavat on his team performance. "Montreal has always been a strong team. I felt that we controlled the game very well. Our team is quite young and we were hoping the game wouldn't go to penalty kicks because I think they got a little more experience than we do. My hat goes off the girls, they worked hard."
The first half left much to be desired as both teams still looked hung up on losses from the day before. The play took place mainly in midfield, with neither team being able to establish a rhythm.
The only real scoring chance came in the 36th minute when UOIT defender
Sara Voisin (Waterloo, Ont.) made a great individual run to break through the Montreal defence, firing a shot just wide past a diving Emily Beaudoin (Boisbriand, Que.).
Similar to the opening half, much of the second lacked offensive pressure with limited opportunities to open scoring.
Extra time gave rise to the game's best chance when in the 114th minute, Carabins's Karine Constantine (Sainte-Therese, Que.) hit the crossbar after shielding the defender just inside the box. Ridgeback keeper
Melissa Linton (Cobourg, Ont.) also made a key fingertip save just near the end of stoppage time to help take the game to penalties. Linton made 11 saves but was unable to come up with a save in penalty kicks as the Carabins advanced to the consolation final.
UOIT's
Kylie Bordeleau (Cambridge, Ont.) was named player of the game for the second straight match.
