UOIT falls 4-1 to TWU in their CIS Championship debut

CIS Women's Soccer Championship: Trinity Western defeats UOIT 4-1 Box Score
Consolation Semifinal: UOIT vs. Montreal – Fri. Nov. 7 – 11 a.m.

QUEBEC CITY – In their Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national championship debut, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to the two-time reigning national champion Trinity Western Spartans.

The Ridgebacks will now take on the Montreal Carabins on Friday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. in the first consolation semifinal of the day. Montreal lost 2-0 in their quarter-final match to the OUA champion Ottawa Gee-Gees.

"I'm proud of the girls," said UOIT head coach Peyvand Mossavat, who was named CIS coach of the year on Wednesday. "Some rookie mistakes let us down, but the girls kept trying to play and they didn't give up regardless of the score. I can't be happier."

Thursday's match marked UOIT's debut at the national championship and some early game nerves were exposed as they allowed two Trinity Western corner kicks in the opening five minutes. Vanessa Kovacs would capitalize on the second set piece, as she was able to get her head on the corner provided by teammate Krista Gommeringer to draw the first goal of the game.

Jenna Di Nunzio would add to the Spartans lead in the 33rd minute when she was the recipient of a UOIT turnover.  Unmarked, Di Nunzio was able to turn and fire a right footed shot from the top of the box past a sprawling Melissa Linton (Cobourg, Ont.).

With their backs against the wall, UOIT showed a lot of fight against the heavily favoured Spartans. The Ridgebacks were rewarded for their efforts as they were given a free kick before the halftime whistle. Kylie Bordeleau (Cambridge, Ont.) would etch her name in the UOIT record book, striking the ball perfectly into the top right corner to give the Ridgebacks their first goal at a CIS national championship.

With UOIT looking for the equalizer early in the second half, Trinity Western goalkeeper Christina Oliverio came up with a number of key saves to conserve the Spartans ahead. The defending champions would make UOIT pay for their missed opportunities, as Kovacs hooked up with Gommeringer off another corner kick to regain the two-goal lead.

Gommeringer was able to put the game away in the 70th minute when she struck a shot from range that went in off the crossbar and into the net. Gommeringer finished the night with one goal and two assists.

"Experience was a big factor," said Mossavat. "We are a very young team making our first appearance at nationals. We had a plan and executed it well but some individual errors let us down."

Shots on target finished 10-8 in favour of the Spartans, with Oliverio coming up with seven saves in the win.

The Spartans will play Ottawa in the first semifinal on Friday at 4 p.m.
