Ridgebacks blown out in Waterloo

OUA Women's Hockey: Waterloo defeated UOIT 6-0

WATERLOO, Ont. – Being on the road for the entire month has taken a toll on the UOIT women's hockey team as they suffered their worst loss of the 2014 season Saturday afternoon in Waterloo.

Waterloo simply dominated the Ridgebacks as they picked up a 6-0 win, marking their third straight shutout victory. Freshman Stephanie Sluys, who was named last week's ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female athlete of the week, has been in net for all three wins, as she made 18 saves to blank the Ridgebacks.

After winning the first three games of their seven game road trip, the Ridgebacks have dropped three straight being outscored 16-2.

With UOIT trailing 2-0 midway through the second period, Waterloo would tack on three power play goals in a four-minute span to put the game out of reach. Two of the goals came after a five-minute checking to the head penalty called against Sam Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.). Tori Campbell (Saskatoon, Sask.) was in net for all six goals against, as she faced 25 shots on goal.

Marissa Redmond (1G, 1A), Angela MacDonald (1G, 1A), Rachel Marriott (1G, 2A) and Carolyn Burke (1G, 1A) all had multi-point nights for Waterloo.

UOIT (5-5-1) and Waterloo (4-5-3) are tied for tenth place in the OUA conference standings, but are only two points behind five teams. One of those clubs is the Laurier Golden Hawks (6-3-1), who UOIT will take on this Sunday night. The game against Laurier will be their last of their seven game road swing.
