OUA Women's Hockey: Laurier defeated UOIT 5-1 WATERLOO, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team's season long seven-game road trip ended with a 5-1 loss to the No. 8 ranked Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday night.
After starting their road swing with three straight wins, the Ridgebacks fortunes were reversed as they closed it out with four straight games. During the losing streak, UOIT was outscored 21-3 including 11-1 this weekend against Waterloo and Laurier.
Despite falling below .500 (5-6-1), the Ridgebacks are only two points out of a playoff position. Laurier has recorded points in three straight games and improves to 7-3-2.
Fifth year veteran Laura Brooker would score the first and last goal of the contest and assisted on on the fourth goal to end the night with three points. Brooker is in the final year of her OUA career that has seen her record 122 points in 115 regular season games.
Heather Platt scored the game-winning goal for Laurier, which was her first of two. All five Laurier goals came against
Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.), who made 15 saves in the losing effort.
Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.) would score UOIT's only goal, as she cut the Golden Hawks lead to 3-1 in the second period. Ball scored all three of UOIT's goals in their four game losing streak. Defenseman
Stephanie Spencer (Bowmanville, Ont.) recorded an assist, marking her first point of the season.
UOIT outshoot Laurier 17-12 over the first two periods, but were overpowered in the third with Laurier holding an 8-2 advantage. Amanda Smith made 19 saves for the win.
The Ridgebacks power play woes continued as they went 0-for-3 against Laurier. UOIT is 1-for-28 in their past eight games.
On Saturday night, the Ridgebacks will make their return to the Campus Ice Centre as they host the Western Mustangs (11-0-1). Western has won 10 straight games and is sixth in the CIS national rankings.
