Ridgebacks fall to the Rams

OUA Men's Hockey: Ryerson defeated UOIT 6-2

TORONTO – The UOIT men's hockey team allowed four second period goals as the Ryerson Rams skated to a 6-2 victory over the Ridgebacks in Toronto Thursday night.

UOIT has lost two straight games by a combined score of 14-2 and fall below .500 with a 5-6-1 conference record. The Ridgebacks sit in sixth place in the OUA standings, leading the Queen's Gaels (5-4-0) by one point.

After Ryerson scored the opening goal of the game, Alex Derlis (Campbellcroft, Ont.) would respond for UOIT with his second goal of the season. Jake Logan (Napanee, Ont.) and Mike Robinson (Stouffville, Ont.) recorded assists on the play.

In the second period, Ryerson would break things wide open scoring four straight goals and chasing starting goalie Colin Dzijacky (Thunder Bay, Ont.) from the game. Mitch Gallant, who is third in OUA goal scoring this season, would start the Ryerson rally seven minutes into the period.

One promising note for the Ridgebacks in the third period was that 2013-14 leading scorer Mitch Bennett (Fenelon Falls, Ont.) recorded his first goal of the season. Bennett has missed the majority of the season after suffering an injury in preseason action.

The Ridgebacks outshot Ryerson 35-32, including 16-8 in the final stanza. Ryerson was 2-for-4 on the power play and also scored a shorthanded goal. UOIT would finish 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

UOIT will make their return to Toronto on Friday night to take on the Toronto Varsity Blues. This will be their lone meeting of the 2014-15 season. Puck drop at Varsity Arena is 7:30 p.m.
