OUA Men's Hockey: UOIT defeated Toronto 4-3 (OT)TORONTO – The UOIT men's hockey team bounced back from a 6-2 loss to Ryerson with a 4-3 overtime victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues Friday night in downtown Toronto.
Making just his second career start in goal for UOIT,
Jesse Raymond (Woodstock, Ont.) had a 42-save performance to go on and earn his first career OUA win. After allowing a goal 2:24 into the game, Raymond settled down and held Toronto off the scoresheet until the late stages of the game.
Trailing 3-1 late in the third, Toronto scored two goals in the final three minutes to even the score and force overtime. UOIT's
Mike Robinson (Stouffville, Ont.) proved to be the overtime hero, burying a rebound off a strange bounce 3:44 into the extra frame.
Robinson had two goals and an assist in the win, as he recorded his first career multi-point game.
Also scoring for the Ridgebacks was
Brendan Wise (Stouffville, Ont.) and
Kevin George (Uxbridge, Ont.). Wise's goal came on the power play in the third period, giving the fifth year forward his 60
th career point.
Cameron Yuill (Belleville, Ont.) and
Alex Derlis (Campbellcroft, Ont.) each recorded two assists in the win.
Only two penalties were called in the game, with both team's getting a single power play opportunity. UOIT was 1-for-1 with the man advantage while the Ridgebacks killed off an interference penalty called on George in the first period.
Making his sixth straight start in goal for Toronto, Michael Nishi made 30 saves in the losing effort.
UOIT (6-6-1) climbs into a tie for fifth place in the conference standings with the Laurentian Voyageurs (6-5-1) who have dropped three straight games. Toronto (4-6-1) have lost two straight games.
Things will not get any easier for UOIT next weekend as they host the Windsor Lancers (11-1-0) for back-to-back games at the Campus Ice Centre beginning on Saturday night. Windsor began the year on an 11-game win streak before falling to the McGill Redmen 2-1 (8-3-0).
