OUA Women's Soccer: Ryerson defeated UOIT 1-0 TORONTO – All good things must come to an end. That was the case for the No. 4 ranked UOIT women's soccer team on Wednesday night as they were shutout 1-0 on the road against the Ryerson Rams.
The loss puts an end to the Ridgebacks' unbeaten streak, as they were 11-0-2 heading into the match. The Ridgebacks were one of only three teams in the country without a loss prior to tonight's match against the Rams.
It took Ryerson 85 minutes to score the game-winning goal, as UOIT goalkeeper
Melissa Linton (Cobourg, Ont.) got caught outside the box and was unable to play the ball, while Ryerson's Amy Tahmizian was credited with the goal, her first of the season. The Ryerson game-winner was the first goal allowed by Linton in the Ridgebacks' last six games.
UOIT had a great chance to score in the closing minutes, but Ryerson's Katrina Gonyea made a sliding goal line clearance to keep the Rams in front.
With 11 shots on target for UOIT, Ryerson goalkeeper Brittney Clendenan was the star of the game as she earned her third shutout of the season.
Jessica Mithrush (Thunder Bay, Ont.) had one of UOIT's best chances in the 29
th minute of the first half, but she drilled her shot off the crossbar.
UOIT is now 11-1-2 on the year and is four points back of the No. 2 ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees for first place in the OUA eastern conference standings. The two teams will square off in Ottawa on Saturday, October 18 at 1 p.m. UOIT beat Ottawa 3-2 in their season opener, the Gee-Gees' only loss of the year.
The Ridgebacks have clinched a bye in the opening round of the OUA playoffs. UOIT will host a quarterfinal match on Sunday, October 26 at 3:30 pm at Civic Fields in Oshawa.
