Ridgebacks earn a win over the nationally ranked Gryphons
OUA Women's Soccer: UOIT defeated Guelph 2-1
GUELPH, Ont. – The UOIT women's soccer team broke out of a slump on Sunday afternoon as they defeated the nationally ranked Guelph Gryphons by a score of 2-1.
The Ridgebacks found themselves down 1-0 when Courtney Whiteside of the Gryphons scored in the first 20 minutes of the game. UOIT captain
Shannon Lucas (Oshawa, Ont.) would level the score in the 27th minute, as she beat Guelph goalkeeper Alexandra King on a penalty shot.
Coming off the bench in the second half,
Alyssia Robichaud of Toronto scored the game-winning goal for UOIT in the 64th minute. The goal marked Robichaud's first in her OUA career.
Both goalkeepers were busy as the teams combined for 21 shots on target.
Laura Whelan (St. John's, N.L.) made nine saves for UOIT and King stopped nine of 11 shots.
Kayla De Souza (Scarborough, Ont.) had an outstanding game for UOIT in the midfield, controlling the flow of the game and creating a number of Ridgeback scoring chances.
With the win, the Ridgebacks get back in the playoff hunt as they trail York by two points for the final spot in the OUA western conference. Guelph remains in first place with a 5-3-0 record.
UOIT will take on the Laurier Golden Hawks (4-1-3) on Friday night, before returning home on Sunday to take on the Western Mustangs (4-0-3).
