OUA Women's Soccer: York defeated UOIT 2-1

NORTH YORK, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks had points taken away from them in injury time as the York Lions pulled out a last-minute 2-1 victory in OUA women's soccer action on Sunday.

With the teams tied at 1-1, UOIT was awarded a penalty kick at the 89 minute mark. Sonia Sampogna, who scored for the Ridgebacks early in the second half, was stopped by York goalkeeper Sarah Fiorini.

York would capitalize on the big save as they marched down the field and were awarded a penalty kick of their own off a UOIT handball. Sarah Wong of the Lions would put the penalty kick past UOIT's Laura Whelan in injury time to give York the win.

Samantha Furlin scored the game-tying goal during the 70th minute for York.

The Lions leapfrog UOIT in the OUA western conference standings, as they have posted a 1-2-3 record six games into the season. The Ridgebacks have five points with a 1-3-2 record.

UOIT's next game is at home as they host the nationally ranked Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, September 21. Kick-off for UOIT's homecoming game is 1 p.m.
