UOIT earns three OUA women's soccer all-star selections

HAMILTON, Ont. – Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced the league's award winners for the women's soccer west division on Wednesday and UOIT received three all-star awards.

UOIT's Kylie Bordeleau (Cambridge, Ont.), Sonia Sampogna (Toronto, Ont.) and Kayla De Souza (Scarborough, Ont.) were all named second-team all-stars.

"I wanted to congratulate all of the girls," said head coach Peyvand Mossavat. "The entire coaching staff is proud of their accomplishments. Players like Kylie, Sonia and Kayla continue to raise the standard for our program. Our team is quite young and to already be recognized as an OUA all-star is a great accomplishment for any of our players."

This is the second consecutive year that Sampogna, a third year health science major, has been named an OUA all-star for UOIT. In 13 games, the forward finished fifth in conference scoring with six goals to bring her career total to 13. This is the third time Sampogna has been recognized as an OUA all-star as she was selected in2010 as a member of the York Lions.

Bordeleau, a second year health science major, anchored the Ridgebacks backline that allowed only 18 goals in 16 regular season games. The Ridgebacks allowed one or fewer goals in 11 conference games this season and shutout McMaster in the opening round of the playoffs. Bordeleau also scored the game-tying goal against the Windsor Lancers in the 90th minute of the Ridgebacks regular season finale. This marks Bordeleau's first OUA all-star award.

Despite missing the final four games of the regular season with a broken rib, De Souza was also named an OUA all-star. In 12 regular season games, the arts major scored two goals while controlling the flow of the game up the middle. She also proved to be one of the toughest players in the league in the playoffs, as she made her return to the line-up in the quarterfinals against Laurier. De Souza was selected five times as the UOIT player of the game during the regular season.

In two seasons in the OUA, the UOIT women's soccer program has received six all-star awards.
