OUA Women's Soccer: UOIT defeated McMaster 3-1

OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women's soccer team scored two goals in the first four minutes of their game on Friday night as they picked up a 3-1 victory over the McMaster Marauders.

UOIT has won five out of their last six games which includes three straight victories. The Ridgebacks sit in fourth place in the OUA western conference with a 6-5-2 record, trailing Guelph (7-5-2) and Laurier (6-2-3) by just three and one point respectively.

Head coach Peyvand Mossavat's pre-game speech must have been extra-inspiring on Friday as the Ridgebacks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first four minutes. Emily Copeland-Dinan (Ottawa, Ont.) scored the second goal of her freshman campaign as she broke in past the McMaster defence and scored on a second effort attempt in the 3rd minute. Just one minute later, Sonia Sampogna (Toronto, Ont.) would strike again for the Ridgebacks giving them a two-goal advantage.

UOIT controlled the majority of possession over the course of the game as they used quick passes to move the ball around the field and create scoring opportunities. Over the next hour, UOIT would have a number of chances to break things wide open, but McMaster goalkeeper Brittany Duffey made a number of key saves.

During the 69th minute, McMaster would get back into the game when Samantha Salata scored off a rebound that UOIT goalkeeper Melissa MacKinnon (Millgrove, Ont.) could not handle.

With McMaster pressing for the late game-tying goal, UOIT would bring the ball ahead in transition with Sampogna burying a one-timer in the top right hand corner during the 84th minute to put the game on ice.

UOIT would have 12 shots on target, six from Sampogna. The third year forward has four goals this season, matching a career high set back in 2010.

MacKinnon would face four McMaster shots on target as she made three saves in the win.

This was UOIT's second victory over McMaster in the past six days, as they earned a 1-0 shutout against the Marauders last Sunday.

The Ridgebacks will head to Waterloo on Sunday for an afternoon matinee against the Warriors (2-9-1). UOIT's home finale is set for Wednesday night against the York Lions, which will be broadcasted by Rogers TV.
