OSHAWA, Ont. – Melissa Berney of the women’s hockey team and Ben Bevan of the men’s curling team have been named the UOIT student-athletes of the week presented by Boston Pizza North Oshawa for the period ending January 26.

Berney, a fourth year criminology and justice studies major, helped lead the women’s hockey team to back-to-back wins over Nipissing and Laurentian. The Bowmanville native racked up three points over the weekend and was a key member of the defensive unit which only allowed one goal. Berney is currently on a five-game point scoring streak and is seventh in OUA defensive scoring.

Bevan, a third year commerce major, was the skip of the men’s curling team that qualified for the finals of the Brock Invitational. Bevan and his teammates cruised through round robin play picking up four straight wins over Brock, Laurier, Western and a club team. The Ridgebacks are preparing for the OUA championship that is scheduled to take place from February 13-17 at the Guelph Curling Club.
