OSHAWA, Ont. – Kylie Bordeleau (Cambridge, Ont.) and Taijah Henderson (Ajax, Ont.) have been named the UOIT student-athletes of the week presented by Subway.
Both members of the women’s soccer team, the pair helped the Ridgebacks win UOIT’s first Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championship – in any sport – 1-0 over the Queen’s Gaels.
Henderson scored the lone goal of Sunday’s championship game in the 22nd minute, outmuscling the Queen's defender to earn a breakaway and tuck the ball in the bottom left corner of the net under Madison Tyrell. UOIT won the match 1-0. Earlier in the week Henderson was also named a league all-star for the first time.
Bordeleau, who was named the OUA East Division Most Valuable Player and league all-star prior to the championship, was rewarded for her defensive efforts after the final. She received the Porter Airlines player of the game.
To make their way to the championship game the Ridgebacks defeated the Windsor Lancers 3-1 on Friday afternoon.
The women’s soccer team will now travel to the U Sports (CIS) women’s soccer championship in Wolfville, N.S. from Nov. 10-13. They open against the Trinity Western Spartans at 2:30 p.m. Atlantic.
The UOIT athlete of the week awards are presented by Subway located at 2069 Simcoe Street North in Oshawa.
