St. James comes to the Ridgebacks with a lot of experience coaching women's hockey. His most recent job was as head coach of the Clarington Flames midget AA girls team. Prior to that he was a head coach in 2012 and 2014 at the Ontario Winter Games and an assistant in 2010.
As a player he was a member of the OHL's Sudbury Wolves (1980-82) and Kitchener Rangers (1982-83) before playing the 1983-84 season in the American Hockey League with the Rochester Americans.

From 1984-87 he played in the International Hockey League (IHL) before spending seven seasons in the German Hockey League with Duisburg, Regensburg, Weiden and Herford.
