Montaniel graduated from York University with a BA in kinesiology and health sciences and was a member of the York University men's basketball team prior to playing at the semi-pro level in the Philippines from 2007-2013 upon graduating.

As a director for Fil-Can Nation Select, Montaniel brings fundamental leadership abilities where he works to grow the Filipino sports community by providing athletes with education, exposure and training to get to the next level worldwide.

Montaniel is the founder and head trainer of RGT Basketball, a program that provides skills development and performance training throughout the GTA. He has a genuine love for the game and is passionate about sharing his knowledge and experience with others.

As head coach for Durham Rising Suns Girls basketball since 2018, Montaniel brings excellent knowledge and understanding of coaching and gives guidance to athletes both in basketball and life.
