Ridgebacks fall to Gees-Gees in nationally ranked match up

OSHAWA, Ont. –  The Ontario Tech men's basketball team took the second-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees down to the wire Saturday night but fell 69-66 in the game's dying seconds.

Before the game, the Ridgebacks honoured Levi Ogbonna (Toronto, Ont.) for his four-year career with Ontario Tech. They also acknowledged student-trainers Jennifer Harvey and Victoria Wyatt for their contributions to the team over the past two years.

The two teams traded OUA play-of-the-week contenders throughout the first half, but the Ridgebacks mounted an early 30-13 lead that was capped by a Zubair Seyed (Cambridge, Ont.) buzzer-beater at the end of the first quarter. Seyed would also get an assist on another last-second three-point shot from Ogbonna, giving the Ridgebacks a 44-32 lead heading into halftime.

At the half, the Ridgebacks fans were treated to a dance routine from Afiwi Groove as part of the ongoing celebration of Black History Month at Ontario Tech.

Seyed led the Ridgebacks in scoring with 24 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Keon Baker (Pickering, Ont.) had another outstanding defensive performance with 17 points, six steals, three rebounds, and a block, and Ogbonna had 13 points.

In the second half, the Gee-Gees found their footing defensively and held the Ridgebacks to 11 points in the third quarter, and rallied around Justin Ndjock-Tadjore offensively, who had 23 points, ten rebounds, and three steals on the game. The Gee-Gees continued their defensive showing in the fourth quarter, but the Ridgebacks battled down the stretch as the two teams traded free throw attempts in the game's final seconds before Seyed free throw rattled out with less than three seconds remaining.

The Ridgebacks will now look towards their first playoff game in program history after finishing with a 16-6 record in just their fourth season as a team. Stay tuned to goridgebacks.com for updates on a date, time, and opponent when they become available.
