Ridgebacks drop game one of OUA playoffs

OSHAWA, Ont. –  The Ontario Tech men's hockey team dropped their opening game of the OUA playoffs 5-1 to the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees on Wednesday night.

The Ridgeback were greeted with a raucous Valentine's Day crowd for the game, which included a puck drop from President and Vice-Chancellor of Ontario Tech, Dr. Steven Murphy.

The Gee-Gees wasted no time setting the tone, picking up a goal from Anson McMaster 32 seconds into the game. The Ridgebacks responded with a goal from Gabriel Bernier (Victoriaville, Que.) with assists from James White (Peterborough, Ont.) and Sean Ross (Bracebridge, Ont.). Peter Stratis would finish the period with another goal for Ottawa, giving them a 2-1 lead after one period.

A Ridgebacks penalty allowed Nick Bowman to capitalize on a powerplay for the Gee-Gees after a solid start to the second period for the Ridgebacks. Max Grondin would further the lead for Ottawa midway through the third period, making it 4-1.

Franky Lapenna continued his fantastic season in net for the Gee-Gees, stopping an incredible 46 of 47 Ridgebacks shots on net.

Ontario Tech will be back in OUA playoffs action when they head to Ottawa on Saturday, February 17 at 7 p.m. for a must-win game two against the Gee-Gees.
