OSHAWA, Ont. – The Ridgebacks held their annual academic brunch, presented by the Office of the Provost, on Tuesday morning and recognized the academic efforts of 72 students.
To go along with the 72 athletes that were honoured with Ridgebacks All-Academic awards, there were 51 Ridgebacks student-athletes named OUA Academic Achievment winners, and 33 student-athletes named U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians. The brunch culminated in the awarding of the prestigous Bob and Sallie Baun Varsity Scholarships to athletes. This year, the Bob and Sallie Baun Varsity Scholarship was increased to eight athletes, four men and four women, who are returning student-athletes with a GPA of 3.7 or higher. These student athletes are outstanding members of our community, and have demonstrated excellence in a high performance athletics, while exhibiting strong leadership qualities.
This year, it was award to
Nikita Mohan (Ottawa, Ont.) from women's soccer,
Zoe McGee (Katana, Ont.) of women's hockey,
Jasmine Groleau (Hearst, Ont.) from curling and
Venuga Kariharan (Scarborough, Ont.) from badminton on the women's side. On the men's side, it was award to
Stefan Prica (Toronto, Ont.),
James White(Peterborough, Ont.) and
Andrew Suriyuth (Kingston, Ont.) from men's hockey andÂ
Adam Klimek (Oshawa, Ont.) from men's soccer.
Of note, Prica marks the first time a men's basketball player has been the recipient of the Bob & Sallie Baun Varsity Scholarship.
Also of note, Praveen Manickavel, Sara Esongola-Biango, Colin Byers and Jasmine Groleau repeated as their teams respective Top GPA leaders.
