Ridgebacks launch Black Athletes Association for Marginalized Groups

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Ontario Tech Ridgebacks are proud to announce the launch of the Black Athletes Association (BAA) for Marginalized Groups.

This association was created to support black student-athletes and work towards creating a safe space for black athletes, educating Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on anti-racism and work to eradicate racism within Ontario Tech.

"I am very pleased to see our student-led BBA come to life," said athletic director Scott Barker. "Eliminating racism is something the Ridgeback family at Ontario Tech is committed to being a part of. The collaboration from our student-athletes, the athletic department, and our equity and diversity team at Ontario Tech has established a foundational piece in providing students with support, but also the platform to continue to raise awareness and demand equality."

Women's field lacrosse player and BAA co-founder Brianna Nicolas believes important conversations are already happening on campus and that this group will play a key role in furthering what has already been started.

"I believe that the BAA is an important association to have at our school as it allows black voices to be heard and pave the way for structural change within the institution," she said. "Additionally, the BAA will help create a safe space for black athletes, while advocating for anti-racism and anti-oppression. Overall, this association will aid in eradicating racism not only within the Ridgeback community, but also Durham Region."

Joining Nicolas as co-founders of the group were D'on Duncan and Ammar Hassan from the men's basketball program.

"I believe that having this committee is important to have on campus because it will provide the necessary tools and resources for ethnic minority students and athletes dedicated to achieving excellence," said Hassan. "While doing so, it will also create a safe environment where members can feel a sense of community and a system of support, ultimately improving their educational and athletic experience."

The election process for the inaugural BAA executive will take place in the coming weeks for Ridgeback varsity student-athletes, with the president also joining the Ridgeback Leadership Council, whose mission is to work towards creating unity of all Ontario Tech teams in order to enhance Ridgeback Pride both on campus and in the surrounding community in the Durham Region.
