GUELPH, Ont. – The Ontario Tech Ridgebacks curling teams opened the 2020 OUA curling championship in Guelph on Thursday, each with a win and a loss.
The men started with day with a 6-5 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs. After opening with a deuce in the first end with hammer, they stole in back-to-back ends to lead 4-0. Laurentian answered with a three in the fourth, but Ontario Tech held on with single points in the sixth and eighth ends en route to their victory.
They closed out their opening day with a 4-1 loss to the Carleton Ravens. Tied 1-1 after five ends, Carleton scored one with hammer in the sixth, before stealing two in the seventh to earn the win.
For the women, they had a similar showing as the men. They started with an 8-4 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues, which was solidified with a three-point eighth end.
In the final draw of the opening day they struggled against the Queen's Gaels as Queen's opened with a three with hammer, before hanging a five on the board in the fourth to go ahead 8-1 at the break.
Both teams are in action on Friday with a pair of games each.
