A tale of two seasons ends with win in Guelph

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Ontario Tech women's hockey team wrapped up their 2019-20 season with a 3-1 win over the Guelph Gryphons Wednesday night.

Natalie Wozney (Whitby, Ont.) and Megan Johnston (Goderich, Ont.), who led the Ridgebacks offensively throughout the year, continued their output with Wozney potting a pair of goals and Johnston adding a pair of assists. Erin Ross (Lucan, Ont.) who had an up-and-down sophomore season, finished on a high as she opened the scoring Wednesday night with her fourth of the year.

In net, Briar Hughes (Thornton, Ont.) continued her strong second half, making 32 saves in collecting her fifth win and finished the second half with a 5-1 record.

The victory was the Ridgebacks' eighth win of the 2020 calendar year, giving them a record of 8-3 since the calendar flipped.

This is vastly different than how the team began the year, as they struggled for wins, although being competitive in every game. Throughout the first 12 games of the season, Ontario Tech collected just one win, against the Gryphons, which happened back on November 16. Overall, the Ridgebacks had a record of just 1-11 through their first 12 games but rebounded and finished the final 12 with a 9-3 record, including a pair of wins over Queen's and Western.

With just three graduating players, Nicole Zabel (Palmerston, Ont.) Kassidy Ford (Gananoque, Ont.) and Grace Donaldson (St. Thomas, Ont.), the Ridgebacks will return a very similar roster for the 2020-21 season.
  • Wozney led the Ridgebacks with 23 points (11G, 12A) and currently sits third in both league scoring and goal scoring.
• Johnston finished second on the Ridgebacks with 21 points (5G, 16A) and currently sits tied for fourth in league scoring and tied for second in assists.
• Zabel finished the season with six points (1G, 5A) and now sits second all-time in program scoring for defencemen.
• Rookie Nicole Escano (Kingston, Ont.) finished the season leading the Ridgebacks defence in scoring with eight points (3G, 5A).
• Hughes now sits third all-time in program wins, as well as moving into third in GAA (goals against average) and second in save percentage.
Celine Tessier (Chapleau, Ont.) picked up her third career shutout on Nov. 30 against Queen's Gaels and claimed sole possession of third all-time for that category.
• The Ridgebacks finished the season with the best record over their final 10 games going 8-2.
