OSHAWA, Ont. – It took extra time, but the Ottawa Gee-Gees were the winners of Game 1 of the opening round OUA playoff series against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Wednesday night.
Kyle Ward scored 5:26 into overtime to lift the Gee-Gees to a 2-1 win over the hometown Ridgebacks.
Ontario Tech trailed after one period thanks to a Kevin Domingue power play goal at 18:42 put Ottawa ahead.
Sean Ross (Bracebridge, Ont.) created space for the equalizer as he drew the Gee-Gees defenceman before putting the puck into the slot for
Cody Grant (Beaver Bank, N.S.) to one-time home with 5:28 to go in the middle frame.
Domenic Graham made 30 saves in the win for the Ottawa, while
Leif Hertz (Kingston, Ont.) turned aside 33 Gee-Gees shots for Ontario Tech.
The series now moves to Ottawa where the third-place Gee-Gees host Game 2 on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. If necessary, Game 3 will also be played in Ottawa on Sunday at 3 p.m.
