OSHAWA, Ont. – Building towards the OUA championship, which Ontario Tech University is hosting in October, the Ridgebacks continued regular season play at home on Saturday.
They opened with a lopsided 23-0 victory over the York Lions, before being edged 12-10 by the defending champion Queen's Gaels.
Nicole Martindale (Brooklin, Ont.) continued to be the team's leading scorer as she scored nine times against the Lions.
Ayden Briggs (Oshawa, Ont.) added five goals, while
Caitlyn Cote (Oshawa, Ont.) picked up four.
Scoring individual goals in the victory over York were
Abigail Giesbrecht (Oshawa, Ont.),
Dale Wilson (Saskatoon, Sask.),
Alex Cafik-Irwin (Vancouver, B.C.),
Anna Twohey (Port Perry, Ont.) and
Amanda Di Mascio (Georgetown, Ont.).
"Coming out of the second weekend of the season with three wins and being two goals away from beating the defending OUA champions is a good feeling," said head coach
Liane Chornobay. "We've been together as a team for a short period, but continue to improve and are coming together as a group. We'll work on a few things this week in practice and clean them up next weekend."
The second game saw many of the same names on the scoresheet as Martindale, Briggs and
Hannah Bragg (Oshawa, Ont.) all scored three goals, while Cote added a single tally.
Ontario Tech led 9-7 going into the final quarter, but a huge fourth by the Gaels saw them outscore the hosts 5-1. Kiah Shanks led the Queen's offence with four goals.
Lauren Young (Fergus, Ont.) was in goal for the Ridgebacks in both games. She finished with eight saves against the Gaels after the shutout of the Lions.
Next weekend the team travels to Waterloo to play three games at Laurier. They face the McMaster Marauders on Saturday before battling the Western Mustangs and Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday.
Overall Record: 3-1
Next Game: Saturday, Sept. 21 @ McMaster Marauders (4:45 p.m. – Waterloo, Ont.)
