OSHAWA, Ont. – On Tuesday morning, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) athletic department recognized 47 students at the department's annual academic brunch presented by the Office of the Provost.
"We're extremely proud of what our student-athletes are able to accomplish not only in their respective sports this year, but also in the classroom and today is an opportunity to recognize the achievements each of these student-athletes has attained in the classroom," said
Scott Barker, UOIT athletic director.
The 47 student-athletes were acknowledged for their success in the classroom through the all- academic awards, top GPA by sport, and the Bob and Sallie Baun Award.
Norbert Wojdylo of the badminton team, who majors in biological science was named a recipient for the second straight year, while
Josh Maguire of the men's hockey team, who majors in criminology and justice studies was the other male recipient.
Katherine Koehler-Grassau of the women's soccer team, a recipient of the Bob and Sallie Baun Award in 2015, was announced as a female award winner alongside women's curler
Brittany Andrey. Koehler-Grassau is an applied & industrial mathematics major, while Andrey is enroled in forensic psychology.
Each recipient of the Bob and Sallie Baun Award were also presented with a scholarship from the Bob Baun scholarship fund, which was first awarded in 2014-15.
Of note, for the second straight year Wojdylo (men's badminton), Andrey (women's curling),
Danielle Bates (dance),
Lindsay Tomlinson (women's field lacrosse),
Kierstyn Hawke (women's rowing) and Quintyn Walcott (men's rowing) all won the top GPA award for their respective teams.
This Thursday, the 13
th annual UOIT Athletics Awards Gala will take place at the Regent Theatre in Oshawa.
