Ridgebacks finish fourth at OUA lacrosse championship

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Trent Excalibur held off the defending OUA women's lacrosse champion Queen's Gaels on Sunday afternoon to capture their second Patterson Cup with a 10-7 victory.

For the Excalibur their title comes two years after their first-ever title.

First team all-star Rachel Di Giorgio led the Excalibur's offence in the victory with four goals. Second team all-star Leah Michel added two for Trent.

The Queen's had Christina Holmes and first team all-star Annie Lloyd each contribute two goals in the loss.

The silver medal finish marks three straight seasons in the championship game for the Gaels.

Earlier in the day the Western Mustangs held on to win bronze over the host Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. OUA first team all-star Fawn Porter scored five of the Mustangs goals in the 14-11 victory.

Offensive MVP and first team all-star Nicole Martindale led the Ridgebacks with five goals in the game, while first team all-star Caitlyn Cote wasn't far off the pace with four goals of her own.

"Despite our result today we couldn't be more proud of all the work our athletes and training staff did this season," said head coach Liane Chornobay. "Making it in the final four is not an easy feat and I cannot thank everyone enough for all the support and effort. It takes a village and we have an amazing one here at Ontario Tech - from our athletes, to the trainers, to our friends and family who rooted for us from near and far - thank you. We'll be back and hungry as ever next season."

For the dominant Mustangs, the bronze comes after missing the final four last season for the first time in a number of years. The appearance by the Ridgebacks in the bronze medal game was their final since they hosted in the OUA championship in 2014.
