OSHAWA, Ont. – It wasn't pretty, but the UOIT women's soccer team earned a valuable point on Sunday in a 1-1 draw with the Ryerson Rams.
Katie Joyce, off an assist by Maria Poveda, opened the scoring for Ryerson in the 33
rd minute of the match. The goal stood as the only one after 45 minutes, despite the Ridgebacks outshooting the Rams 9-7.
The second half saw numerous quality chances for UOIT, but it was
Mikaela Tierney (King City, Ont.) finishing on loose ball in the box off a corner kick that tied the match in the 63
rd minute.
Melanie Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ont.) was the closest to lifting the Ridgebacks to victory in the 90
th minute, but put the ball just over the crossbar.
The match ended with
Olivia Tierney (King City, Ont.) making seven saves in the draw. Elisa Lapadula turned aside 11 Ridgeback shots for Ryerson.
With the point and a win by Nipissing on Sunday, UOIT is now in a tie for third in the OUA east with 13 points. Ottawa leads the way with 19 points.
The next match for the Ridgebacks is Sept. 22 against the Trent Excalibur.
