TORONTO, Ont. - Traveling to the provincial capital for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, the UOIT Ridgebacks women's lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season, defeating the York Lions 17-5 before falling to the Queen's Gaels 16-0.

Brooke Watson (Courtice, Ont.) was impressive in the opening contest, leading the Ridgebacks in scoring with five goals and one assist. Third-year attack
Julia Vinkovic (Oshawa, Ont.) picked up a hat-trick in the outing, also adding one assist to her stat totals. Four more Ridgebacks scored two goals in
Elyse Lockhart (Pickering, Ont.),
Brianna Nicolas (Ajax, Ont.),
Samantha Gates (Uxbridge, Ont.), and
Amanda Di Mascio (Georgetown, Ont.). UOIT's scoring was rounded out by a single marker from
Dorina Voynov (Oshawa, Ont.) and an assist from
Sabrina Lyon (Bowmanville, Ont.).
Following the offensive outburst in the opening game of the afternoon, the Ridgebacks were overmatched by the undefeated Queen's Gaels in their second contest of the day. Sitting atop the OUA standings, the Gaels had only allowed an average of four goals per game in their first four games played, while scoring an average of 13. UOIT was unable to solve the Gaels, resulting in the shutout loss.
The Ridgebacks will next travel to Peterborough, Ont. on Sunday, Sept. 23 where they will challenge the Trent Excalibur and Toronto Varsity Blues. Action will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the second game set for 1:45 p.m.
