PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – The UOIT women's field lacrosse team had their season come to a close after a pair of games over the weekend at the OUA championship in Peterborough.
On Friday in their opening game of the tournament the Ridgebacks fell 14-5 to the Brock Badgers, putting them into the consolation side of the championship.
Samantha Gates (Uxbridge, Ont.) scored two goals for the Ridgebacks, while
Brianna Nicolas (Ajax, Ont.),
Brooke Watson (Courtice, Ont.) and
Julia Vinkovic (Oshawa, Ont.) each scored once.
On Saturday, in the ninth-place game against the York Lions, the Ridgebacks fell 11-10 in overtime.
A back-and-forth affair for the majority of the game, the two teams ensured you never knew what would happen next. After a wild final three minutes in the first half that featured four goals in the final three minutes, the York Lions went into the break ahead 5-4. The second half brought more of the same, but the Lions would find themselves up 10-7 with just over five minutes left.
The UOIT Ridgebacks clearly did not want to just hang up their sticks as they scored with five minutes left and again with just under two minutes left to put enough pressure on the Lions to call a timeout. The Ridgebacks didn't let the break phase them though and Gates scored the tying goal with 11 seconds remaining in the match to send it to overtime.
Gates finished with three against the Lions, while Watson added two.
Elyse Lockhart (Ajax, Ont.) also scored twice, with
Jessica Giesbrecht, Nicolas and
Anna Twohey (Port Perry, Ont.) each scoring once.
The eventual OUA field lacrosse champions were the Queen's Gaels, who defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 11-6 in the final. As host, the Trent Excalibur won bronze.
