OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women's field lacrosse team hosted five games at the Oshawa Civic on Sunday afternoon. Battling the scorching temperature on the turf field, the Ridgebacks ended up walking away with a split in their two games.
UOIT opened the day with a 10-6 win over York, followed up with a 13-3 loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues.
The Ridgebacks got off to a great start scoring eight first half goals to take a commanding 8-3 lead over the Lions. York would fight back with three goals in the second half, but it was not enough to make up the deficit.
Julia Vinkovic (Oshawa, Ont.) and
Elyse Lockhart (Ajax, Ont.) led the Ridgebacks in scoring with four goals apiece, with Lockhart adding an assist on one of
Holly Collins' (Oshawa, Ont.) two goals.
Jessica Giesbrecht (Oshawa, Ont.) also had an assist in the win.
UOIT's defence looked impressive limiting the Lions chances. When they did break through, goaltender
Kassia Almeida (Whitby, Ont.) made key stops to preserve the lead.
In their second match of the day, the Ridgebacks kept within striking distance of the Varsity Blues with two first half goals from Vinkovic. However, the Varsity Blues would score seven second half goals as they earned their third win of the season.
In other action, Trent defeated York 16-1, while Queen's earned wins over Trent (11-7) and Toronto (12-10).
The Ridgebacks will be back in action next Saturday with matches against Western and McMaster. Both games will be hosted by the University of Guelph.
