TORONTO – The UOIT women's soccer team pushed their win streak to five games on Sunday after earning a gritty 3-1 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity Stadium.
With Queen's playing Ottawa to a 1-1 draw, UOIT (5-0-0) is the lone team in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) with a perfect record.
Sunday's win over Toronto was the Ridgebacks third comeback win of the season, as Toronto's Christine Mulligan sent a high shot over the outstretched arms of
Victoria Savage (Woodbridge, Ont.) to make it 1-0 just ten minutes in.
The lead was short lived as
Mikaela Tierney (King City, Ont.) took advantage of a failed Varsity Blues clearing attempt, sliding the ball by Toronto's second-year goalkeeper Vanna Staggolis to even the score before the break.
In the 72
nd minute,
Taijah Henderson (Ajax, Ont.) was the beneficiary of hard work by
Cassandra Sribny (Pickering, Ont.). The fifth-year veteran managed to beat out a Toronto defender to the ball and chip it in front to a wide-open Henderson who scored her fourth goal in as many games.
Henderson would return the favour just before injury time when she sent Sribny one-on-one with the goalkeeper after a beautiful through ball. Sribny calmly found the bottom right corner for the insurance marker.
Savage finished the match with eight saves, matching her season high that she set against Ottawa. UOIT fired 12 shots on target. Savage is third in the OUA in total saves with 29 in five matches.
UOIT will press reset on this weekend's schedule as they will take on Ryerson (Sept. 16) and Toronto (Sept. 17), this time at home. Both games are set to kick off at 1 p.m. at Vaso's Field.
