OTTAWA, Ont. – UOIT finished their opening weekend with two victories in as many days in the nation's capital after picking up a 1-0 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
This marks the first time in program history that the team has started out OUA conference play with two victories.
After a wild 4-3 victory over the Carleton Ravens on Saturday, the Ridgebacks spent their Sunday afternoon across town playing against the Gee-Gees.
There was no score after the first 45 minutes, but there was no shortage of shots. By the break, Ottawa outshot UOIT 9-6 and the goalkeepers stood tall.
The Ridgebacks began the second half applying a lot of offensive pressure, including a free kick that was defended well by the Gee-Gees back line. UOIT's defence was impressive in their own right, continuously clearing the ball from the 18-yard box.
In the 82nd minute,
Taijah Henderson (Ajax, Ont.) finally broke the ice as she scored her second goal of the year on her third shot of the game on a brilliant set up from
Cassandra Sribny (Pickering, Ont.).
That would prove to be the only goal of the game as Ottawa failed to equalize and
Victoria Savage (Woodbridge, Ont.) earned the clean sheet, the first of her career.
UOIT finished their opening weekend with two victories, five goals scored and only three conceded.
NOTES: UOIT midfielder
Katherine Koehler-Grassau plus coaches
Peyvand Mossavat and
Farzad Yousefian were not available at the game because they are representing Canada at the 29th Summer Universiade in Taipei.
