UOIT’s playoff hunt continues after win over Windsor

WINDSOR, Ont. -  The UOIT women's hockey team kept their playoff dreams alive on Saturday after a 3-2 victory over the Windsor Lancers.

The Ridgebacks trail a trio of teams by eight points with three games remaining in their regular season. UOIT will have to win all three games in regulation and get some help if they hope to pass one of those teams for a playoff spot.

UOIT can move one step closer to the playoffs on Sunday afternoon as three points are up for grabs against the Western Mustangs in London at 4 p.m.

With Saturday's game against Windsor knotted at 2-2, third-year winger Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.) scored the game-winning goal with just 1:03 left on the clock. Ball would fire the puck on goal through a screen that beat freshman goaltender Morgan Farrow.

Playing in their final home game of the regular season, Windsor failed to beat Briar Hughes (Thornton, Ont.) a third time as UOIT skated off with three big points. Hughes ended up making 29 saves in her fifth win of the season. The freshman netminder is sporting a 5-3 record.

Alex Frigon (Dartmouth, N.S.), another UOIT freshman, scored the opening goal just 2:37 into the first period. Sarah Biesenthal (Chepstow, Ont.) and Laura Marchese (Burlington, Ont.) added assists on the play.

Krystin Lawrence would strike right back for Windsor, scoring her league leading 20th goal just two minutes later. Ridgeback fans may remember Lawrence as she was the goalkeeper of the Windsor women's soccer team in which UOIT beat in the semifinals.

UOIT would score the lone goal in the second period as Nicole LoPresti (Hamilton, Ont.) notched her fifth of the season at 6:09. Nicole Zabel (Palmerston, Ont.) and Natasha Tymcio (Caledon, Ont.) picked up assists.

In the third period, Meredith Goldhawk managed to level the score at 14:14 to set up Ball's late-game heroics. Kassidy Nauboris (Brampton, Ont.) and Jenna Carter (Whitby, Ont.) had assists on the game-winner.

Both teams went scoreless with the man-advantage as Windsor was 0-for-3 and UOIT was 0-for-2. Windsor outshot UOIT 31-28.
