LONDON, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team suffered their second loss of the weekend as the Western Mustangs pulled off a 3-1 victory over the Ridgebacks.
Tied 1-1 in the third period, Western would capitalize on a pair of power play opportunities to skate away with the two-goal victory.
All three of Western's goals came with the man-advantage as they went 3-for-5 on the power play. UOIT would have eight power play opportunities including four in the third period but failed to score on any of their attempts. UOIT has just one power play goal in nine games this season.
UOIT's lone goal came late in the first period as
Katie Heath (Elora, Ont.) scored her first career OUA goal.
Megan Johnston (Goderich, Ont.) and
Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.) picked up assists.
Briar Hughes (Thornton, Ont.) got the start in between the pipes for UOIT and stopped 24 of 27 shots on goal. Hughes and
Celine Tessier (Chapleau, Que.) have combined for a 1.73 goals against average this season.
After only picking up one point this weekend, UOIT dropped to eighth place in the OUA standings, one point ahead of the Nipissing Lakers who have three games in hand.
The Ridgebacks have only one game next weekend that will be on the road when they travel to Kingston to take on the first-place Queen's Gaels (7-0-1). Game time is 7:30 p.m.
