OSHAWA, Ont. - It did not take long for the UOIT women's soccer team to get back in the win column as they defeated the Nipissing Lakers 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Oshawa Civic.
The win comes 24 hours following the Ridgebacks' 0-0 draw against the Laurentian Voyageurs that broke up their 10-game win streak. With the victory the Ridgebacks' point streak extends to 12 games.
UOIT (11-0-1) remains four points ahead of Ottawa (9-1-3) for first place in the OUA eastern conference as the Gee-Gees easily defeated the Queen's Gaels (8-3-1) 4-0 on Sunday to end the weekend with a pair of wins.
Nicole Zajac (Mississauga, Ont.) would score the only goal of the match in the 69
th minute as the Ridgeback veteran found the back of the net from long range placing it just under the bar.
Cassandra Sribny (Pickering, Ont.) picked up an assist, her second of the year.
UOIT peppered the goal with shots in the first half, outshooting the Lakers 10-4. The second half was more even with shots ending up 7-6 in favour of the Ridgebacks.
Victoria Savage (Woodbridge, Ont.) recorded her seventh clean sheet of the season making five saves. Savage is third in the league in save percentage at .891. Mykaela Volpe ended up with eight saves in the losing effort.
UOIT's next action will be at home against Carleton (Saturday) and Ottawa (Sunday). This will be their final regular season home games of the season as they head up north to Nipissing and Laurentian the following week.
