Three third period goals lift Ridgebacks to victory

TORONTO, Ont. – Goals by Josh Maguire (Cobourg, Ont.), Mike Robinson (Stouffville, Ont.) and Danny Elser (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) in the third period put the UOIT men's hockey team back at .500 on the season and gave the team a 3-2 victory in Toronto.

Up against the Toronto Varsity Blues, the Ridgebacks found themselves down 1-0 after one at Varsity Arena in Toronto. After killing off a Maguire penalty, the Ridgebacks first of the game, Luca Leone took advantage for the Varsity Blue with 1:14 remaining before the intermission – despite UOIT leading 9-7 in shots.

Again, in the second, the Varsity Blues offence got things going around a power play, this time converting before Spencer Roberts (Stouffville, Ont.) was left the box. Aidan Wallace was the goal scorer for Toronto this time, notching his first of the season at the 9:12 mark. In the second period the teams were even with seven shots aside. In a game that saw only 10 penalty minutes between two teams, UOIT went on the penalty kill early in the third after Elser was called for slashing. Fortunately for the Ridgebacks, Maguire scored his first OUA goal shorthanded just 3:14 into the final period.

With only their second power play of the game, UOIT's special teams came alive against as Robinson scored his second of the year, with assists to Brennan Roy (Iroquois Falls, Ont.) and Alex Yuill (Wellington, Ont.). Roy's assist was his team-leading sixth point.

Just 27 seconds later Ridgebacks' captain, Elser, scored his first of the season with assists to Robinson and Ben Blasko (Kingston, Ont.). His goal stood at the game winner as the Ridgebacks found a way to split their weekend on the road.

Tyson Teichmann (Belleville, Ont.) made 17 saves in the win, while Frederic Foulem made 24 in the loss.
