NORTH YORK, Ont. – Kyle Campbell's unassisted goal in the second period broke a 1-1 tie and gave York a 2-1 win over UOIT on Saturday night in North York.
UOIT dropped to 14-9-1 and into a tie for fifth place with the Ottawa Gee Gees (13-7-3) in the OUA eastern conference. York improved to 15-6-2 and picked up its fourth win in five games.
Connor Jarvis (Port Union, Ont.) got UOIT on the board 11:13 into the game, scoring his team leading 13th goal of the year.
Erik Pedersen (Airdrie, Alta.), who was making his UOIT debut, recorded an assist on the goal along with defender
Jake Logan (Napanee, Ont.).
It wasn't until 13:05 in the second period when York broke through as freshman Byrce Milson beat
Tyson Teichmann (Belleville, Ont.) to even up the score. At 17:02, York would take a 2-1 lead when Kyle Campbell scored an unassisted goal.
That four-minute stretch would cost the Ridgebacks the game as they were unable to beat York goaltender Mack Shields for a second time. Shields has a league-low 1.75 goals against average this season.
The Ridgebacks pushed hard for the equalizer as they pulled Teichmann with a minute left in the game. Shields made a key glove save on a blast from
Alex Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) with ten seconds to go that was labeled for the top-right corner.
York finished with a 27-22 edge in shots on goal while both power play units were 0-for-4.
UOIT is back on the road next week when they take on the Toronto Varsity Blues on Thursday, Jan. 26. Game time at Varsity Arena is 7 p.m.
