SUDBURY, Ont. – The UOIT women's soccer team had the first goal scored against them in over 490 minutes of play on Sunday against Laurentian, but that will be easily forgotten as the squad returns to Oshawa with three points after a 2-1 victory.
The Ridgebacks' shutout streak started Aug. 28 against Carleton and was ended in the 33
rd minute of Sunday's match in Sudbury by Megan Ferguson.
The Voyageurs, who narrowly outshot UOIT in the opening half 7-6, held their 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half the Ridgebacks had opportunities early, but it wasn't until the 73
rd minute that
Nicole Zajac (Mississauga, Ont.) tied the game in her second game back in a Ridgeback uniform since suffering an injury while representing Poland at the FISU Games. On Saturday against Nipissing she had one shot on goal.
In the 84
th minute
Katherine Koehler-Grassau (Greely, Ont.) topped her previous season high of two goals by scoring her third of the season for the Ridgebacks. Her goal stood as the game-winner as the UOIT women won their sixth straight match.
Helen Frampton (Toronto, Ont.) made seven saves in the victory for the Ridgebacks, while Dina Mandolesi made seven saves in the Voyageurs loss.
UOIT will now have the week off as they prepare for the Trent Excalibur on Saturday at home. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at the Oshawa Civic.
