OTTAWA, Ont. – The UOIT men's soccer team will have to wait until at least Saturday to earn their first win of the season after falling 2-1 to the Carleton Ravens on Sunday in their season opener.
UOIT fell behind early with the Ravens scoring in the seventh minute of play off the foot of Andrew Bryan.
The Ridgebacks did get their legs soon after, but the momentum they gained came to a halt in the 22
nd minute as the game was stopped for a thunder and lightning delay.
After the game resumed Bryan scored his second of the game in the 37
th minute to put his team ahead to 2-0 at the break.
In the second half the Ravens had a penalty kick early, but didn't capitalize to extend their lead. Minutes later
Fabio Campoli (Frosinone, Italy) was taken down in the box, giving UOIT a penalty kick of their own in the 56
th minute. Although Jared Maloney dove in the right direction it wasn't fast enough to stop Campoli's shot, which cut the lead in half.
Late in the game with UOIT pushing for the equalizer, Carleton had multiple opportunities with space in Ridgeback territory, including a shot off the post – but neither team scored after UOIT's marker as the game ended in a 2-1 win for the Ravens.
In his first OUA start for UOIT,
Nicholas Miller (Oshawa, Ont.) made seven saves on nine shots on goal. Maloney turned stopped two of three Ridgeback shots on goal.
UOIT will now have the week to prepare for their match Saturday afternoon at Ryerson. Kick off in Toronto is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
