TORONTO – Shanelle Doucette scored in double overtime on an end-to-end rush to give the UOIT women's hockey team a 4-3 victory on the road against the Ryerson Rams Saturday afternoon.
Doucette (Bowmanville, Ont.) skated the length of the ice and roofed the puck past Ryerson goaltender Sydney Authier to secure the Ridgebacks' fourth win of the season.
UOIT will close out action heading into the holiday break on Sunday as they host the Laurentian Voyageurs. Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre is 3:30 p.m.
The Ridgebacks forced overtime as
Nicole Gorda (Edmonton, Alta.) tied the game at 3-3 with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. Gorda hammered home a slap shot as she finished off a passing play from
Jenna Carter (Whitby, Ont.) and
Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.).
This was the second straight game UOIT scored in the final two minutes to force overtime.
Veterans
Sam Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.) and
Nicole LoPresti (Hamilton, Ont.) would round out scoring for the Ridgebacks with their fifth and fourth goals of the season respectively.
Doucette would end up with a goal and an assist while Ball had two assists.
Freshman
Briar Hughes made her return in goal for UOIT after suffering an early season injury and earned her first career OUA victory. She was busy in net stopping 47 of 50 Ryerson shots including ten in overtime. Ryerson outshot the Ridgebacks 50-29.
Alex Rodriguez had two goals for Ryerson while Danelle Im had the other.
UOIT (4-4-3) has earned points in three of their last four games and are tied with Ryerson (4-4-3) for ninth place in the standings. They trail Windsor (5-6-2) by just two points for the final playoff position and have two games in hand.
