Ridgebacks comeback attempt falls short

MONTREAL, Que. – The No. 4 ranked UOIT men's hockey team fought hard to overcome some obstacles on Friday night but fell short in a comeback attempt as the No. 9 ranked Concordia Stingers pulled out a 4-3 victory.

When getting on the bus to head to Montreal, the Ridgebacks knew their game against the Stingers was going to be tough. What they didn't know was that they would run into bus issues on the way causing them to arrive at the arena after the scheduled start time.

After Concordia pushed back the start of the game over an hour to accommodate the Ridgebacks, it was all Stingers early on as they shot out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with two goals ten seconds apart.

In the second period, the Stingers would extend their lead to 3-0 as Charles-Eric Legare trickled one past UOIT goaltender Tyson Teichmann (Scarborough, Ont.) on a penalty shot.

Rather than packing it in trailing by three, the Ridgebacks fought hard and chipped away at the Stingers lead. Kyle Locke (Aurora, Ont.) got the Ridgebacks on the board with five minutes to go in the second period while Mike Robinson (Stouffville, Ont.) cut the lead to one just over a minute into the third period. Both goals were scored on the power play.

Robinson has seven goals this season as he set a new career high 13 games into the regular season.

UOIT would control the majority of the play in the final period outshooting the Stingers 10-4 but they could not find a way to beat Concordia goaltender Philippe Cadorette when down by one. Concordia's penalty killing unit came up big fighting off a five-minute cross checking penalty in the frame.

Olivier Hinse scored an empty netter to add some insurance for Concordia in which they would need as Anthony Latina (Belleville, Ont.) scored for UOIT with two seconds left in the game to make the final score 4-3.

With an assist on Latina's late goal, Ben Blasko (Kingston, Ont.) extended his point streak to four games.

Teichmann made 17 saves in the losing effort, suffering just his second loss of the season. Cadorette made 22 saves in his eighth win.

At 10-3-0, UOIT remains in first place in the OUA eastern conference but now have four teams within three points. UQTR is one of those teams at 8-4-1 and are set to host the Ridgebacks on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. McGill (9-2-1) and Queen's (9-3-1) trail UOIT by one point while Concordia (9-3-0) sits two points back.
