NORTH YORK, Ont. – The UOIT women's field lacrosse team's hard work finally paid off as they earned their first OUA conference win of the season on Saturday.
The Ridgebacks opened up the day's action with a 6-3 win over the hosting York Lions followed by a 13-3 loss to the always-tough Queen's Gaels.
Defence was the key to victory for the Ridgebacks led by veteran
Kiera Dever (Ajax, Ont.). Sonya Mwambu, who scored five of the Lions' six goals in their 6-5 victory over UOIT earlier in the year, was held to just one goal on Saturday.
UOIT jumped out to a 5-1 lead at halftime and never looked back.
Elyse Lockhart (Ajax, Ont.) and
Holly Collins (Oshawa, Ont.) had two goals apiece.
Samantha Bullen (Whitby, Ont.) and
Kristin Lemmon (Whitby, Ont.) had single goals.
The Ridgebacks could not carry the momentum from their win into their next game as Queen's earned the 13-3 victory. All of UOIT's goals came in the second half with
Stephanie Cloutier (Courtice, Ont.), Lockhart and Bullen finding the back of the net.
UOIT will be back in action next Saturday when they take on the Western Mustangs followed by a match against the McMaster Marauders on Sunday. Both games will be hosted by Trent University.
