OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women's field lacrosse team ended OUA conference play on a high-note after picking up a 6-5 victory over the McMaster Marauders on Sunday morning.
UOIT has been showing signs of improvement all season long and their hard work has paid off having gone .500 over their last two weekends.
The Ridgebacks needed a comeback effort on Sunday for the win as they trailed McMaster 4-2 late in the first half. UOIT would enter halftime on a positive note as
Carissa Giesbrecht (Oshawa, Ont.) set up
Holly Collins (Oshawa, Ont.) to close the gap to just one goal.
In the second half, the teams would trade goals before
Brittany Simmons (Whitby, Ont.) would level the score at 5-5 with just under 15 minutes to go. Five minutes later, UOIT would complete the comeback as
Brianna Nicolas (Ajax, Ont.) scored to put Ridgebacks in front 6-5.
The Ridgeback defence led by goalkeeper
Cierra Maingot (Whitby, Ont.) would shut down the Marauder offence the rest of the way as the team picked up their second conference victory of the season.
Kristin Lemmon (Whitby, Ont.) and
Elyse Lockhart (Ajax, Ont.) were the other goal scorers for UOIT.
The team will now prepare for the OUA championship hosted by McMaster that is set to take place in Hamilton from Oct. 21-23. This will be the first time in two years that the Ridgebacks are not hosting the provincial event.
